The suburb was once known locally as Suspension Bridge, after the arch crossing at Long Gully, and the housing has layered up around that crossing ever since. Federation and bungalow houses sit up on the ridge, postwar flats fill in lower down, and glassy new builds appear wherever a block has recently changed hands.

An electrician ends up working across all three eras most weeks, often on the very same street.

Retail and commercial premises around Miller Street complicate things further, from the shops and the upstairs medical practice through to the club on Abbott Street, each needing switchgear compliant to a slightly different standard again.

A shop fit-out and a house rewire aren't the same job, and treating them as if they were is how corners get cut. Commercial work here gets scoped against the relevant standard for that premises type, not a residential shortcut stretched to fit.

That matters for a landlord or business owner weighing up quotes. A cheaper price built on residential assumptions is often a clear sign the scope was never properly worked out in the first place.

Two other issues come up often, separate from appliance loads and missing safety switches.

The two tend to travel together, so finding one during a job is usually reason enough to check for the other before we pack up and leave.

2. Confirm the price. Work only starts once the written quote has your sign-off, no exceptions made.

4. Wrap it up properly. Compliance paperwork sorted on the spot, and the workmanship guarantee kicks in from that point.
